Water Cycle Experiment

Water Cycle Experiment with Lizzie.

We have started a new inquiry about planet earth and the water cycle.

Do we drink the same water as the dinosaurs did?
Our deep understandings are:
Asking questions help us dig deeper into what is being learnt.
The water cycle creates the weather on Earth.

Today we did an experiment/demonstration about the Earth's water cycle with Lizzie. We had a jug with a cup in it, some hot water, ice, and glad wrap as shown in the pictures. The water evaporated into steam when Lizzie poured the hot water into the jug, when the steam got to the glad wrap it condensed into water because of the ice and dripped into the cup. When we had finished we discovered there was some water in the cup when there wasn't earlier.

Inquiry Share

Thank you to all parents and whanau who were able to attend our first inquiry share this afternoon!

Spirit of Polynesia

Well done to Lucy Brennan in V5 for participating in our recent show "Spirit of Polynesia".  Bernard was a great performer and we all loved the show!

Lucy was taught how to make animal shapes with her body and hula hoops.  This was a ritual danced by native American-Indians of the past.

Cross Country

Cross Country has been postponed to Tuesday 20th May.
We will be using the same schedule.

See you there to cheer us on.

Inquiry So What

V4 have been deciding what we can do with our learning about living a Balanced life.

We asked ourselves...

So What? Now What?
We have spent time learning about living balanced lives.
What are we going to with our learning?

We used the 3 Steps organiser to help decide what our class
So What? Now What? could be.
What did we do?
What did we learn?
What could the Now What? So What be?
Researched sleep.
Children our age need 10 to 12 hours of sleep.
When you do not get enough sleep it effects your learning and you cannot think straight.
We need sleep to grow and rebuilds cells. (regeneration)
We can use these ideas in our inquiry share.

Mini book for the school library

We share what we have learnt on our blog (iMovie)

Make a show to tell other children in our school live balanced lives.

Share our raps

Promote a perfect school lunch

Mini notices for the children

Make posters

Decision: The Perfect Lunchbox

Researched exercise.
Exercise burns extra energy.
Children our age need  45 to 60 minutes of exercise a day, but 1 to 2 hours is best.
With no exercise our extra energy turns into fat.
Interviewed our parents and grandparents with how to find out what was in their lunch.
Our grandparents and parents lunches were different to ours.
They had less packaged food.
They mainly had home made.
Some parents had cooked lunches at school.
They ate less food.
They used paper bags.
Some of us think our lunches are yummier now.
Completed a statistical investigation about yoghurt.
Sugar is the worst thing in yoghurt.
Fruit yoghurts contain the most sugar.
Most yoghurts contain 2 to 4 grams of fat.
Most flavoured yoghurts have 30 to 60 ยต.
We learnt how to conduct an investigation.
Found out how to write recipes.
We need to be specific of the amounts needed.
A blurb is good to persuade people to make your recipe.
Listing the ingredients in the order of use…
thinkitgreat…
Wrote raps about what we had learnt.
Puppet Pals 2nd Ideas.
They showed us what we had learnt and Bridget then knew we needed to learn about mental health because no one had mentioned it.
Wrote SMART goals.
If you do not have goals you will go no where in life.
Setting goals improves your lifestyle.
Gives your a target to work towards.
Investigated our own lunch boxes.
Boys and girls are similar in what in they have in their lunch boxes.
Boys had more sugar.
Boys had more food.
Learnt about mental health.
If a part of mental health starts to break then the others start falling apart.
There are 4 parts (physical, mental and emotion, social and spiritual)
What you can do look after our mental health.
Inquiry Posters.
We learnt about different parts of food and makes it up.
Proteins
Fats
Enzymes
Carbs…
Wrote a class treaty.
It helps everyones mental health because then we look after each other.
How to work better as team.
Everyone needs to agree.
We can set challenges.

After considering what we had learnt, we decided as a class that the our voices could be the most powerful when influencing the other children at Island Bay School. We have decided to promote a 'Perfect Lunchbox' because we believe this can have real impact on the health and learning of the children at our school. We now have to decide how we are going to do this.

Homework

Dear Parents, Caregivers and V4,

It is important that the children in V4 are developing the habit of completing regular homework. The homework is designed to support the learning at school. The children are expected to be spending time practicing math, spelling and reading.

Bridget

Homework in V4
Homework is going to be given every Tuesday and needs to be completed by the following Tuesday.

Spelling
We are now going to be practicing our essential words at home. You are expected to practice your 6 words at least 4 times over a week. If you run out of words you will need to be tested on the next list. Remember to highlight the words you know how to spell on the list in the back of your reading log and at school in your learning portfolio. On a Tuesday at school you will be tested by your learning buddy at school on the 6 words you have been learning at home.

Reading Log
We are learning to track the reading we are doing at home. Each night you are expected to be reading. Every week record what you have been reading in the reading log. It is important that you are reading a variety of books and not just your old favourites.

Reading Activity
Each week you are expected to complete a reading activity using the books you are reading at home. you will be given the new reading activity every Tuesday.

Maths and Basic Facts
Use Mathletics or Sherwood Maths to practice your maths at home.

Missing

There was a rustle in the bush I creep out of the tent trying not to wake up Vi ; the torch in my left hand.
The sound got louder as I tiptoe. Silence. I scream, two yellow gleaming eyes staring directly at me.
Violet races out of the tent beside me horrified. Looking at us both takes Violet and runs off.
My feet beating on the ground trying to look for her. No use she was gone.

THE B’DAY

I woke up in my bed thinking just another normal day.  Then I yawned lazily. I then remember it’s my birthday!!! I spring out of bed with excitement. The first thing I notice is a path of glitter leading to the lounge. I race in and on the couch are a neat pack of present’s. I run to mums room and wait at the door for an answer and then she looks at me, then we run into the lounge and rip into my presents.

Staglands

Oh, I can’t wait to go to Staglands. I didn’t know that would mean staying in a boiling car for an hour. When we got there I couldn’t wait to get out of the car into the fresh air. We went into the bird cage, it was really scary for my sister and my babysitter. It was scary for my babysitter because two bird started to attack her and the first one was whacking her in the face. It was scary for my sister because she dosen’t like going in the bird cage. We went past a bunch of rainbow birds, exactly the same that attacked my babysitter and we were all scared at that time. We were relieved when we left the bird cage.

Ice Cream

Ice cream of pink strawberry, green limes, orange oranges and more.  Ice cream drifts out from the open yellow doors, children clutching them with smiles of joy on their faces as they lick their creamy flavours. I am looking forward to this, I say to myself.  I step inside the Four Square and walk up to the counter.  I peer through the glass at the different flavours and colours.  It seems to be a big decision what to get.  I finally come to a decision.  “I will have strawberry and lime please” I say to the shop owner.  I leave the shop, but now I am one of those kids clutching their ice creams as they come out.

The Soccer Game.
By Madeline
I ran up the soccer pitch and then suddenly the other team’s defender was right in front of me. As I passed the ball to Fynn, I slipped and fell so the defender that was about to tackle me tackled him and he had no one to pass to so the other team got the ball. Oh! I said to myself, this game is going terribly.

Easter Friday

I wake up on Easter Friday and see my brother standing in the lounge.
''What are you doing''? I ask.
''Waiting,'' he says.
 ''For what''? I say.
''FOR MUM AND DAD TO WAKE UP''!!!
''OH''! I yell back.
He slowly waddles down to his ipod, Obviously, I think. 1000 hours later, Mum and Dad finally wake up, ''YAY!'' Wait...,Sienna, Another 1000 hours later. Sienna finally wakes up, ''YAY!!!'' Now we can do the Easter egg hunt. Cade goes out to hide all 24 eggs. ''Start now,'' he exclaims. Search, search, search, I think. By the end I have 4. ONLY 4!!! I am so depressed. ''Whatever'' I mutter, 4's better than nothing. MMM, caramello...
