Term 2

Term 2 is fast approaching.
Here is what V4 are going to be up to.

Inquiry
Our first inquiry of the year is linked into the health and P.E. curriculum. We are learning about how to live a balanced and healthy life.

Is my life balanced?

Deep Understandings
By setting and reflecting on achievable goals I can improve my life.
By living a balanced lifestyle, can help me improve my learning.

We are going to be finishing this inquiry in the first few weeks of term 3. There will be a sharing afternoon held on Wednesday 21st May at 2.00pm to 2.45pmWe will then be finishing the term with an inquiry about one of the Worlds Earth Systems - Our Weather.

Literacy
Our literacy program will still have the 3 main components - spelling, reading and writing.

We will continue to be learning and practicing different spelling strategies in class spelling groups. We will also be practicing essential words using the spelling flow diagram.

Our reading and writing program is linked into our inquiry. We will start the term by finishing to write the recipes for our recipe book. We will next learn about writing excellent endings for our writing.

In our reading sessions we will be learning about the comprehension strategies asking questions, inferring, analysing and synthesising to help us create deeper understandings about what we are reading. The children have a reading log with activities to complete as part of their homework. Could you please encourage them to be reading regularly and filling in their logs.

During writing we will start the term with finishing writing our recipes for our recipe book  and raps that show what we have learnt in our inquiry. In the next part of the term we are going to be learning to write excellent endings to our stories.

Math
We are going to have a strand focus on Measurement.  In number we are going to be learning about addition and subtraction. We will then start learning about ratios and proportions. We will also learn about different strategies to solve problems.

We are having a focus on learning our basic facts. It is important for the children to know these by heart. It would be great if you could  support your child by helping them practice at home too.

Using onomatopoeia in our writing excites the reader.  We have created art using these sound words in the style of Roy Lichtenstein.
Criteria: Use sound words like Bang, Pop, Ka-Boom
               Use at least 3 layers
Use only primary colours (red, blue, yellow) and then outline with black marker

Here are some models we looked at

Sugar showdown

As a part of our inquiry, we have been finding out how much sugar is in the muesli bar and fruit string snacks we eat at morning tea.

What do the experts say?
 - Children ages 6-10 should be eating muesli bars and fruit snacks that has less than 9 grams of sugar and no more than 5 grams of fat per serve (per bar/packet).

Check in for a later post to see the results.
